The Bulldogs jumped up to 13th in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll this week after getting the better of both Villanova and Xavier on the road and Butler will finish second to the Wildcats in the final regular season standings for the Big East.
That second seed automatically moves Butler into the quarter-finals of the Big East Conference at Madison Square Garden where the Bulldogs will take on either Xavier or DePaul.
The Musketeers and Blue Demons are set as the seventh and 10th seed regardless of the remaining results as are #8 St. John’s and No. 9 Georgetown.
They, like Xavier and DePaul, meet on Wednesday and the winner will move on to meet Villanova in the quarter-final.
Meanwhile Marquette, Creighton, Providence and Seton Hall will scramble on Saturday to determine who finishes third, fourth, fifth and sixth.
Creighton and Marquette play each other in Milwaukee while Providence travel to St. John’s and Seton Hall are also on the road against Butler.
The top seven within the Big East are all currently projected to make the NCAA Tournament although Seton Hall, Providence, Marquette and Xavier are very much on the bubble.
None of the four can afford a loss this weekend and an early exit in the Conference tournament and it wouldn’t be a shock to see two of the four miss out. Which two of course, is the question?
