McEvoy was on board Almandin when winning the 2016 Melbourne Cup, and was pleased to notch another big win.

Almandin had one and a quarter lengths to spare on Ambitious with seasoned stayer Who Shot Thebarman, who was another half head away in 3rd, while preferred Gailo Chop came 4th.

” He took a trip a bit more forward than I believed we may be however he took a trip actually well and he was strong at the end of the 2400 metres today.”

It was not all great news though as fitness instructor Liam Howley, who got his very first Group One win, got a dressing down and a $1000 fine from Racing NSW stewards over the directions released to McEvoy.

McEvoy pressed forward and had Almandin running 3rd for the majority of the race, various from the Australian Cup on 10th March when Almandin originated from back in the field to run 4th.

Chief steward Marc Van Gestel informed Howley the guideline was clear and the released speed maps had Almandin back in the field.

” Most anticipated him to be even more back,” Van Gestel stated. “It is an essential guideline for the stability of racing.”
